  • Back into playing sunless sea and i’ve just noticed that if you say “isle of cats” out loud it sounds like “i love cats”. @failbettergames is this intentional? bc i feel like that’s something you guys would do.

THE DARK-SPECTACLED ADMIRAL: We’ll send a frigate at once. Where is this taking place?

THE DARK-SPECTACLED ADMIRAL: I love cats too, but where are the pirates?

  • Fallen London lets you hire agents, equip them and send them on jobs, and they inevitably end up wearing whatever gear you have that’s not quite good enough to use yourself but that you can’t get rid of - because it’s not sellable, or it’s too rare to part with, or it has some niche use you might need to take advantage of.

A Fallen London screenshot, showing the Mild-Mannered Mondaine (a fashionable young lady with spectacles and her hair up in a bun) equipped for the mission 'Breaking and Entering'.ALT

This might be the most appropriately-equipped one of my agents has ever been. She’s sneaking into a facility and stealing documents, so she’s got a cloak, a mask, a dark lantern, a training safe, gloves made of living tongues (rest assured they are very slippery, good at working things out of crevices, and can even lie for you) and a white tiger who is themselves an experienced spymaster.

A Fallen London screenshot, showing the Wily Bathyphile (a lady with a vest, a cap and a mass of curly hair) equipped for the mission 'Beneath the Waters'.ALT

For contrast, I have another agent whose mission is to explore underwater shipwrecks, and she’s wearing an accountant’s bowler hat, a dead jellyfish and a giant bat’s stocking, and is carrying a device that emits every colour of light, another device that only emits black and white light, and a mirror for reflecting all the abovementioned light. She is accompanied by another tiger, who is smoking a big cigar.

A Fallen London screenshot, showing the Luckless Captain (a dark-eyed fellow in uniform with a long white beard) equipped for the mission 'Zailors, Astray'.ALT

This zalty dog, meanwhile, is rescuing stranded zailors while wearing face cream, boxing gloves and very shiny shoes, carrying a knife from a now-illegal combat sport and a powerful microscope, and riding a Welsh folk tradition-cum-bicycle adorned with a relic of St Eligius while being followed by a parrot that issues death warrants.

That awkward feeling when you're the only one at the party who hasn't been redrawn in the new style.

  • I've seen a few folks asking about Fallen London's different art styles so I thought I'd clarify as best I can (for someone who's never been part of Failbetter Games, just a long-time fan)!

First of all, much of Fallen London's art is by Failbetter's Art Director, Paul Arendt. I believe at least one of these is (the left image in the second row) is by Senior Artist Erion Makuo. In any case, you can see that they're both highly skilled artists and can produce works in the same style.

Many of these images are entirely new, rather than redraws of existing images. That said, the game does include many images that have been redrawn once or more over the 15-odd years of Fallen London's history. I divide these roughly into three generations - the first generation being highly stylised, the second being moderately stylised, and the third being the most realistic.

They all have their undeniable charms, and those early cartoony designs helped establish Fallen London's humour! The new ones are bloody gorgeous, though - just really pretty. I've put together some examples of evolving designs under the cut!

  • There are also some that skipped a generation, or haven’t received a third-generation redraw yet. The process has not been wholly linear!
